It’s not often that a team, let alone a city, likes change. That’s exactly what the New York Giants and New York City have been doing in the last year or so. After the disappointing 4-12 season in 2011, the team made a number of changes to the organization, including the hiring of new head coach Tom Coughlin, and the drafting of Eli Manning as the new franchise quarterback.

While Eli Manning hung up his helmet and shoulder pads for good after the 2019 season, it didn’t take long for him to find a way back into the NFL. And while he doesn’t have to identify a linebacker or catch a touchdown pass in the red zone in his new position, Manning still plays an important role with the New York Giants.

In many ways, the reunion of a legendary quarterback and one of the NFL’s most confusing teams comes at the perfect time.

With the future of the franchise at stake, the Giants need the help of a former star more than ever.

Did Manning face the Giants at the end of his career?

It is possible.

But that doesn’t change the fact that the last time the team won was when Manning was at the helm. Since going 11-5 in 2016, the Giants have won just 18 regular season games. Their problems are largely due to the erratic play of their starting quarterback Daniel Jones.

No matter how you look at it, Manning’s replacement just hasn’t lived up to expectations since he was picked as the No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Jones has yet to prove he deserves the tag of franchise quarterback (he’s already made 29 fumbles in 27 games) and is indecisive on the bench.

Until the Giants become more consistent at that position, they will have a hard time winning football games. In his third year in the league, Jones is under pressure, but it remains to be seen if he can take a big step in the right direction.

But with coach Joe Judge working hard to create a new culture, New York has a chance to move up in the NFC East standings. But Judge needs the help of his current and former players to get the Giants back to the playoffs.

As the Giants look to take a big leap forward in Jaja’s second year at the helm, the team has enlisted the help of a familiar face. Instead of playing quarterback, Manning will work for the organization in the areas of operations and fan engagement. According to ESPN, it will also develop original content.

I’m ready for anything. But I’m focused on the business side of things with the business partners and community relations, which was always very important to me when I played here and has been very important to me my whole life, Manning said. I look forward to seeing where I can make the biggest impact in helping the Giants achieve their business and social goals.

The Giants made a fantastic move by bringing back a four-time Pro Bowler and two-time Super Bowl champion. Manning won’t have a direct impact on the game, but his presence could pay off in other ways. As one of the most popular stars in franchise history, he should command immediate respect at meetings and social events. And as one of the few players to spend his entire NFL career with the same team, Manning clearly has a strong connection to Giants fans.

More importantly, he returns at a pivotal moment in the franchise’s history. While the quarterback position remains questionable, the team has enough talent at other positions to compete for a playoff spot. Giants fans are waiting for Jones, but their patience may run out soon. Manning’s new role gives him a chance to connect with fans and instill confidence in a team that certainly has an interesting future.

The only question is: Now that Manning is back, will the Giants win again?

Are better days coming for Daniel Jones and the Giants?

After a 6-10 season and a second-place finish in the NFC East, the Giants will need to make a drastic change on offense if they want to make the postseason for the first time since 2016. Fortunately for Jones, general manager Dave Gettleman has done a good job of building a strong supporting cast around him.

Kenny Golladay, who led the NFL with 11 touchdown receptions in 2019, moved to the Giants after signing a four-year, $72 million contract. The former wideout of the Detroit Lions brings size (5-foot-10) and big-play ability to a Giants offense that ranked 31st on the scoring list last season. In addition, the Giants added a dynamic playmaker in the 2021 NFL Draft by selecting Florida’s Kadarius Toney with the 20th pick.

Of course, the fate of the franchise rests largely on the shoulders of Saquon Barkley. Can he regain the form that made him so unsettled at Penn State after his ACL tear that ended the season? Or will he struggle to live up to his status as the second pick in the 2018 draft?

If Barkley returns at full strength, the Giants have enough talent at those positions to make things difficult for opposing defenders. However, it’s all about Jones being able to keep the ball, make good decisions and score points.

Unfortunately for Giants fans: If the third-year quarterback fails, the franchise will have to hit the reset button at the most important position in the sport.

For some reason, it seems that Eli Manning is more important to the Giants’ future than the player who will replace him.
