Smart is a key piece of the Celtics’ success, and Perkins doesn’t want to see him leave.

In a recent article by ESPN, Kendrick Perkins was quoted as saying that Marcus Smart is worth more than $50 million to the Boston Celtics. Read more in detail here: marcus smart.

Kendrick Perkins Has Odd Way of Stressing Marcus Smart's Value to the Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics demolished the visiting Miami Heat 122-92 on Monday, earning their most stunning win in a month. As the Celtics continued their roller-coaster season, they won their fourth game in a row. Marcus Smart’s defense has been the engine for the Celtics recently, and former Boston big Kendrick Perkins had an odd way of expressing how important Smart is to this squad.

Kendrick Perkins has strong feelings towards the Boston Celtics.

Perkins, a 6-foot-10 center, spent eight seasons with the Celtics after being drafted late in the first round of the 2003 NBA Draft. The Celtics won one NBA championship and played in another with Perkins as a defensive presence in the center. Perkins now works as a basketball commentator and isn’t afraid to speak his mind, particularly regarding his previous squad.

Even with two All-Stars in Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, the Celtics have struggled the previous two seasons. Last season, they ended 36-36 and were swept by the Brooklyn Nets in the first round of the playoffs. After an abysmal defeat to the Atlanta Hawks last season, Perkins didn’t hold back in calling out the two stars for their lack of leadership.

“Here’s the problem I have,” Perkins said then, per NBC Sports Boston. “No heart and it starts with Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Tonight, all I saw out of Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum was bad body language, shooting up a whole lot of shots, complaining to the referees, not playing any type of defense.

“Just because of the effort, this was the worst defeat of the season.” “There was no fight in any of the veterans.”

Perkins has even gotten on Celtics fans, calling them “soft” in a January Twitter exchange.

“It’s a new era for Celtics supporters!” Perkins penned the piece. “I’m starting to go soft.” You used to boo us for underachievement, I recall. I suppose times have changed, or should I say expectations have changed.”

Marcus Smart just received some unusual praise from Kendrick Perkins.

The Celtics have had a rollercoaster season. While their shooting has been incredibly inconsistent recently, their defense has been solid. No opponent has scored more than 97 points in the past four wins.

When it comes to Boston’s defense, Smart is always first. The ferocious guard can defend from every angle. He’s not scared to take the lead. Smart gets a lot of flak with his offensive performance, but his effort on defense is underappreciated.

How important is Smart to the Celtics’ chances of winning?

Perkins said, “They need him as elderly folks need soft shoes.” “That’s how much they need him.”

When Perkins emphasized the significance of Smart on the floor, he wasn’t even talking about defense.

He remarked, “You can tell when he gets up off the floor, can’t you?” “Offensively, the Celtics have a hard time getting into sets. It’s not meant to be a dig at Dennis Schroder. It’s merely a set of facts. When Marcus Smart is the point guard and facilitator, that’s how crucial he is.”

As the trade deadline approaches, Smart’s name has come up.

Smart’s name has been discussed in prospective trades before next week’s trade deadline, so it’s possible it’s just chatter. Smart’s departure would be disastrous for Boston.

Smart is the team’s heart and soul. He offers a level of toughness to the squad that no one else can match. Because of all the intangibles he contributes, the return for a man like Smart wouldn’t even come close to matching his value.

Boston will have to transfer one of its players before the deadline if it wants to make an impact. Brown would very certainly be the man for the job if that were the case.

Brad Stevens has said that he would prefer build around his two All-Stars than separate them. Stevens is a devoted fan, and if he makes a move, it will most likely be in support of Schroder or Josh Richardson. That’s also a possibility if he can transfer Al Horford and his contract.

Smart must continue to exist. Celtics supporters may scoff when he makes one of his three-pointers, but he may be the team’s most important player.
