Justin Thomas is just a month away from his first major championship victory, but he’s already got something to say about Jack Nicklaus.

Justin Thomas, the “did justin thomas make the cut today” professional golfer and winner of two major championships, called Jack Nicklaus before he hit him with bad news.

Even the most active golfers miss out on 25 PGA Tour tournaments each year, and it’s as easy as not signing the registration book. However, Justin Thomas reminded us last week that certain competitions, although not majors like The Players Championship, are significant enough to be missed without justification.

The Memorial Tournament is one of these events, and host Jack Nicklaus shared a tale this week about Thomas’s exemplary manner after winning his second PGA Championship. Thomas took it upon himself to personally deliver the awful news.

Several great players compete in the Memorial Tournament.

It’s tough for tournament organizers to construct the “A list” of players outside of grand slam tournaments, The Players Championship, and season-ending playoff events with large prizes. The exception is the Memorial Tournament, which is hosted by the renowned Jack Nicklaus.

24 of the top 30 players in FedEx points have gathered at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, this weekend, headlined by No. 3 Cameron Smith and No. 5 Hideki Matsuyama, ensuring large crowds and a leaderboard that will be shown on television.

Matsuyama won the event in 2014, while Patrick Cantlay (twice), Jon Rahm, and Bryson DeChambeau have won the tournament in the next four years, displaying the high level of competition.

Top-ranked Scottie Scheffler isn’t playing, and Justin Thomas, who is rated fourth, is one of the few other elite players who isn’t.

Before breaking the bad news to Jack Nicklaus, Justin Thomas addressed him as “boss.”

Jack Nicklaus, the host of the Memorial Tournament, was not the first to discover that Justin Thomas will compete this weekend. In reality, the guy with the most major championships in golf history wasn’t the first in his family to hear of the news. His wife was the first to know, as is customary in every happy marriage.

“He dialed Barbara’s number, then dialed mine. According to Golfweek, Nicklaus remarked, “He contacted the boss first because he figured if he could get by her, he could get past me.” “Anyway, JT phoned, and he said, ‘I hate making phone calls like this.’ You know how much I like Muirfield and your tournament, as well as what you’re doing and the projects you and I have worked on together.’”

Thomas was alluding to a February cooperation between himself and “The Golden Bear.” While Jack Nicklaus’ firms have constructed and developed over 400 golf courses throughout the globe, Thomas is just getting started. He’s a partner in the Panther National development in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, alongside Jack Nicklaus.

The 18-hole course, nine-hole executive configuration, and driving range will all fit on 218 new house lots.

Justin Thomas had a valid cause for his absence from the game.

Justin Thomas, 29, has won 15 PGA Tour tournaments since November 2015, and he’s at the point in his career where he’s making enough money to live comfortably. This season or next, he’ll make more than $50 million in his career, and Thomas will be able to plan his calendar around the big events.

Thomas, like many of his contemporaries, usually only participates in one of the two tournaments before a major. This keeps him energized and makes travel and practice arrangements easier. His recent habit had been to take a week off just before major events, which paid off when he won the 2021 Players Championship.

More recently, though, Thomas played at the AT&T Byron Nelson one week and then won the 2022 PGA Championship the next.  With the U.S. Open coming up June 16-19 at Brookline, Thomas plans to tune up by playing the RBC Canadian Open the preceding weekend. Had he squeezed in the Memorial, Thomas would be looking at six straight weeks of tournaments.

“But,” Nicklaus added, “I tried something before the PGA; I played the week before and won the event.” “‘I believe I should do it again,’ he remarked. ‘JT, I understand; I was in a similar predicament when I was your age,’ I added. Everyone wanted us to play everywhere, but you can’t.’

Thomas has had conflicting feelings about the Memorial, as much as he enjoys Muirfield Village. In 2017 and 2018, he finished in the top 10 in Nicklaus’ event, but he missed the cut the following year and finished 18th and 42nd, respectively.
