Tiger Woods’ visit to the venerable San Diego course has been in the news lately, with the news that he’s coming back in 2021. The reason for his return has been widely speculated, but until now no one had named Tiger’s most cherished moment at Torrey Pines.
When Jon Rahm won the 2019 U.S. Open in California, it was his first major as a professional golfer. He turned pro in 2017, and earned his first tournament win at the 2018 Northern Trust Open, but didn’t win a major until this year’s U.S. Open, which he took home in a playoff. But what is the most cherished moment of his career? Rahm has a special connection to Torrey Pines, where he played a lot growing up, and considers this place like a second home.
No golfer has spent more time at Torrey Pines Over the years, the U.S. Open has been to Torrey Pines a staggering 36 times, and in the last 40 years, it has only been won by two men. No golfer has spent more time at Torrey Pines than Jon Rahm, who made his first appearance at the event in 2016. To commemorate his time at the course, Rahm recalled one specific moment from his first U.S. Open.. It’s hard to imagine that he had his best day as a professional golfer, especially on the course where he lifted the U.S. Open trophy and cashed a $2.25 million check.
But Ram’s first major league triumph isn’t even a cherished moment in Torrey Pines. In 2018, the Spaniard asked his current wife, Kelly, to marry him at this spot. Three years later, he scored the biggest win of his young career at the same venue, on his first Father’s Day as a brand new father.

Entering the final round of the 2021 U.S. Open, about 15 players had a realistic chance of winning the event and their third major title this year. And it wasn’t just names that topped the leaderboard. On Sunday, Dustin Johnson, Bryson Deschambault, Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy tried to take the lead, but all failed on the back nine.
So the tournament became a race between two men – Aries and Louis Oosthuizen.
Oosthuizen seemed to have the championship in his hands when he took a two stroke lead with a few holes to go, but Rahm distanced himself with a number of successful birdies on the 17th and 18th. The equalizer hole. As the pressure increased, the South African hit his tee shot on 17. He almost gave Rahm the win at the US Open.
The victory was Ram’s sixth at the track and the first major title of his career. In addition to the glittering trophy to take home, Rahm received $2.25 million for the win.
But even if all that were true, Sunday was not Ram’s favorite day at Torrey Pines Golf Course.

Sunday at Torrey Pines may have been Rams’ most successful day as a professional golfer, but it wasn’t his finest moment on the jewel of the San Diego golf course.
In 2018, Rahm asked his wife Kelly to marry him while hiking at nearby Torrey Pines State Reserve. Of course she agreed, and earlier this year the couple had their first child, a boy named Kepa.
In the year leading up to Rahm’s proposal, Torrey Pines held a special place in his heart when he won his first PGA Tour event at the 2018 Farmers Insurance Open. San Diego quickly became John and Kelly’s favorite city in the United States, so it was easy for Rahm to make a choice when deciding where to pop the question.
It was the right thing to offer at our special place, he said Sunday.
It really reminds me of coming home. It’s not quite the same, but the coastline, the weather, the temperature… I think that’s what really resonates with me. I’m sure you do.
Rahm may love San Diego and Torrey Pines, but he’s always been even more proud of his Hispanic heritage. He grew up with Seve Ballesteros as an idol, so it was only natural to dedicate his victory in the U.S. Open to the Spanish legend.
I knew my best golf was yet to come and it’s hard to explain what just happened because I can’t even believe I made the last two putts and became the first Spaniard to win the U.S. Open, said Aries of Torrey Pines. It was really for Seve [Balesteros]. I know he did his best, and usually we think of him a lot during the Masters, but I know he wanted to win this tournament more than anything.
