In the Ryder Cup, the U.S. takes on Europe in a match of national pride, bragging rights, and hopefully a little bit of friendly competition. The hype surrounding the Ryder Cup can be seen as a direct reflection on the status of the U.S. team, so expectations can be high. To add to the pressure, the U.S. players have a lot to do with the team they choose to take to the Ryder Cup. For example, the U.S. captain, Tom Watson, has named his three captain’s picks , including two young guns, Jimmy Walker and Patrick Reed, who have been on top of their game this year. On the other hand, Paul Goydos, the third

Phil Mickelson has been a non-factor in Ryder Cup competition. And after captaining several losing teams, Lefty has become an afterthought for the U.S. team. But, based on our analysis, it appears that the five-time major champion is playing his best golf in years.

The comeback is on! After a mediocre start to the 2013 season, Phil Mickelson went through one of the most phenomenal stretches of golf in his career, taking first place in 3 of 4 tournaments spanning the months of June and July. Though Mickelson has a long way to go before he can be considered for captain’s picks, his recent domination of a few of the biggest tournaments in the world has brought him back into the conversation.

If you thought Phil Mickelson would feel the pressure of being on 15-foot par at the PGA Championship, imagine what Steve Stricker will go through in late August. Stricker will lead Team USA to the 2021 Ryder Cup. Half of the 12-man team competes and earns points in tournaments. The two main names for his hopes of making the Ryder Cup team are Xander Schauffele and Billy Horschel. Schauffele is sixth and last so far in automatic qualifying with 11,291.19 points. Horschel is 12th with 7,730.22 points. His significance lies in the fact that he is currently the first American golfer to be eliminated when Stricker uses one of his captain’s picks on someone lower on the leaderboard – like Mickelson. Winning his sixth major at the age of 50 is a major accomplishment for Michelson. However, his 2021 performance prior to the PGA Championship suggests he has no real hope of closing the gap of over 4,700 points by the end of the final points tournament, the BMW Championship, in late August. Getting the 1,155 at the expense of Horschel is more realistic and improves Mickelson’s chances, but it still doesn’t guarantee a Ryder Cup spot.

What happened to Phil Mickelson?

After an off week, he finished tied for 10th at the Barracuda Championship and tied for 18th at the Barclays Championship. While his critics claim the belly putter is a crutch, Mickelson’s supporters suggest that even if he qualifies, he will be too much of a distraction at the Ryder Cup.
