Today, Troy Aikman is a legend of the Dallas Cowboys, a three-time Super Bowl champion, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and a leading NFL analyst. What most fans don’t know is that the quarterback struggled early in his career, as did the Cowboys.Aikman talked about his career with Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay and NFL Network’s Peter Schrager on their podcast, recounting his worst moment as a QB. Although it seemed painful at the time, Aikman can now look back on it with a smile, now that he has passed.

In his final season at UCLA, Aikman won the Davie O’Brien Award as the best quarterback in the country. He also finished ahead of Miami’s Steve Walsh and behind UCLA’s Rodney Peet and Oklahoma State’s Barry Sanders for the 1988 Heisman Trophy. The Dallas Cowboys chose him as their number one pick in the 1989 NFL Draft.
After the game, new owner Jerry Jones fired legendary Cowboys coach Tom Landry and hired Jimmy Johnson from Miami. In this year’s Supplemental Draft, Johnson selected his former QB Walsh.
Aikman eventually wrote Walsh off for the 1989 season. Dallas traded the college QB. UCLA’s former signal-caller responded with just 9 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 11 starts. Aikman finished the match with an 0-11 record, while Dallas finished 1-15.
This year was incredibly difficult and humbling, but Aikman says the beginning of year two was even worse.

Aikman spoke with McVay and Schrager on the Flying Coach podcast about how difficult this second season is.
My sophomore year was even harder than my junior year, Aikman says. Even though I won a few games as a starter. He later called it the low point of my career. He said he doesn’t have much confidence in the coaching staff and that Johnson probably thinks they traded the wrong guy.
He told a story that perfectly illustrated the problems he faced in his second year in the league:
We were in a two-minute situation in a Texas stadium, I called the play, went under a defender to kick the ball, and the defender said: Hey, Dad, it’s not me. You’ve got the wrong person. And I know Jimmy’s thinking about it: My God, what’s going on? I’m pretty sure he thought I was the dumbest defender he’d ever had. So that was probably my low point.
Despite this low point, the Cowboys finished the 1990 season with six more wins than the year before. The next year, Aikman went 11-5 and won the playoffs. Then, in 1991, the Dallas Cowboys went 13-3 and won Super Bowl XXVII.

Jimmy Johnson’s coaching and Troy Aikman’s development as a quarterback played a big part in the Cowboys becoming three-time Super Bowl champions in the 1990s. But it was the team’s deal in the first season of Aikman and Johnson that paved the way for what came next.
Herschel Walker, one of the most physically gifted runners in football history, became a two-time All-Pro in 1989. That didn’t stop Jerry Jones from selling him to the Minnesota Vikings in the biggest transaction in NFL history, according to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Jones sent Walker to Minnesota along with a third-round pick in 1990 and a tenth-round pick in 1991 in exchange for five players (one of whom was immediately traded for another pick) and first- and second-round picks in 1900, 1991 and 1992, a sixth in 1990 and a third in 1992.
The 18-player, one-seater deal is still the most important, but also perhaps the most lucrative. The main outcome of this deal is that the Cowboys added Emmitt Smith, Darren Woodson and Russell Maryland after a few other moves and trades. They all became important cogs on the road to victory.
If Jones made that trade, he also almost traded sophomore player Michael Irvin in a separate deal.
